Jul 01,  · The book contains an extremely useful section describing the experiences of both beginning and more experienced students who have followed the practice described. The final section features key texts in translation, including those from medieval Zen masters, making the book a complete introduction and guide to Zen meditation/5(51). "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few." So begins this most beloved of all American Zen books. Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as has this famous opening line of Shunryu Suzuki's classic. In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as 4/5(23).

If you ever study formally in one of those schools, this distinction will be very important. chronological bibliography of books on Zen in English clearly shows, the pioneer teacher of the subject outside Japan, for except for Kaiten Nukariya's Religion of the Samurai (Luzac and Co., ) nothing was known of Zen as a living experience, save to the readers of The Eastern Buddhist (), until the publication of Essays in Zen.

Oct 29,  · Myotai Sensei's book is an entryway into zen practice that covers the essentials and yet beckons us to get further, deeper and most importantly trust our own heart on our spiritual journey. I have practiced with her and trust her voice, her expression, insight and loving heart.

And received dharma teaching from her words, and her being/5(36). This is a pretty good book for someone just getting into zen. Although it does sometimes lapse into "zen speak," it does a fairly straightforward job of explainIng some of the more odd-seeming elements of zen, along with some discussion of different types of zen practice/5.
