Little Claus makes the mistake of proclaiming to the village people all the horses he works are his. This is the closest we get to honesty from this guy in the whole story. Being partially honest about selling his grandmother’s corpse is his shining moment.

Big Claus owns four horses and Little Claus only one. Big Claus out of jealousy kills Little Claus's one horse. But because of that, the plot becomes complicated and "breathless," involving Little Claus, a farmer's wife, the church deacon, and the returning farmer.
